DHC Services

Darulahayat centre (DHC) will provide various services some of which are listed below:

  • Prayer area
  • Library
  • Tutoring
  • Language teaching
  • Qur’anic and Islamic studies
  • Vocational training
  • Business research
  • Sport and public hall
  • bathrooms

Why are these services selected?

What are the problems the community in this area facing?  The problems the community in this area face are many. These include the lack of resources to education facilities such as adequate and efficient public or private schools, libraries, internet services, etc.

The report about the school-leaving examinations, by Ethiopia’s Ministry of Education released on 27 January 2021-22, shows very bad performance of students. The ministry revealed that, of the nearly one million school students who participated in the national school-leaving exams, only 3.3% – a meagre 29,909 students – managed to score the required 50% to pass. The details are more telling. This report shows the efforts that are required by all stakeholders, not only the government, to participate in the improvement of the quality of the education.

The outcome of lack of adequate resources leads to poorer educational outcome which consequently results in poorer economic, social and health conditions. In addition, the illiteracy in some regions including the region that DHC is going to function in is widespread. The social impact of low level of literacy or illiteracy is severe. It excludes individuals even from participating in the existing opportunities due to the limit of accessing information delivered in different media formats such as newspapers, social media, etc.

Impacts of illiteracy and poverty on the local and wider communities and desperate measures

What are tangible impacts of illiteracy on this community and similar communities? Youth from this area and surrounding are among those who are turning to desperate solutions, such as escaping poverty via human smugglers. As stated on the European commission website, https://home-affairs.ec.europa.eu/policies/migration-and-asylum/irregular-migration-and-return/migrant-smuggling_en,  “the loss of migrants’ lives at the hands of smugglers in the Mediterranean Sea reminds us of the acute need to tackle migrant smuggling, using all of the legal, operational, and administrative levers available”.  In fact, there are many from this area and the surrounding who followed this way and lost their lives on their journey to find better life.

How will DHC Contribute?

How will the services that DHC bring contribute to easing these complex problems?

There are many business potentials in the area that DHC services can help to uncover. However, to realise the existence of these potentials there are many factors to be achieved in advance. DHC believes education is one of the key factors that leads towards finding these potentials. Therefore, improving the level of education is vital. The services of tutoring, library, language teaching and sport facilities play major roles to creating business opportunities and improve the wellbeing of the locals. Hence, DHC believes that services that will be provided by it will make major differences.

DHC has the will to share the experiences it acquires from constructing the complex and from the services it will provide with similar organisations and communities..

How to achieve the goals of DHC?

The list of services that have been shown above is long. However, we will achieve these goals in phases. The DHC project is made up of two main phases, each phase having its own subphases. The two main phases are (1) DHC complex construction and (2) post DHC Construction phase that involves the implementation of the goals of DHC services. The focus at this stage is to construct part of the complex. This complex is made up of numerous parts that will be built gradually. Phase one of the construction is building a multipurpose hall and bathrooms.

About DHC Complex

The following pdf file shows the building plan of DHC complex. Current building phase which includes the multipurpose hall and the bathrooms is shown on page 5. On this page, O and K represents these two parts of the complex.

The size of the multi purpose hall that is going to be built in the first phase is 25m X 30m. This hall can function as the prayer, sport facility and meeting areas.

The bathrooms will be expected to serve as educating the user about hygiene and how it should be a bathroom that contributes to the health of users. In addition, since the location of the complex lies on the main highway connecting many regions. It is expected that the users of this highway can benefit from the services of these bathrooms.  The bathrooms and some toilets will be designated as pay-as-you use payment model.  This is a win-win for users and the centre. The centre generates income from the usage of the bathrooms while the users benefit from the services which is not offered anywhere else in the area.

The cost of the first phase is expected to be 15 million birr and this cost can easily increase dramatically due to many reasons that are not under the control of the centre.
