Impacts of Illiteracy
The community in this area lacks resources to education facilities such as adequate and efficient public or private schools, libraries, free internet services, etc. These problems lead to poorer economic, social and health statuses. Figure 2 shows one of the social problems resulting from the consequence of illiteracy, which is crime.
Regarding economic impact “the World Literacy Foundation (2018) reported that illiteracy and low levels of literacy have estimated to cost the global economy approximately £800 billion annually”. These costs are due to this group’s inactive participation in the economic activities and relying on social programs. The problem this group faces in non-developing countries is far greater when compared to those who live in developing countries, because there is no social programs that they rely upon. Thus, this group requires greater aids than their counterparts living in developing countries.
Furthermore, the significance of literacy is apparent as the global economy is moving towards knowledge economy. This local and the wider communities face the consequences of illiteracy that limits them from creating new employment opportunities and even from participating in vacant ones, if any.
The relationship between illiteracy impacting education is also apparent as explained in this video.
